How grade calculations work

Weighted grade average = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights). If weights don't add to 100%, the calculator normalises them. The "required final grade" formula works backwards from your target to find what you need on the exam.

Weighted Average = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)
Required Final = (Target − Current × (1 − FinalWeight)) ÷ FinalWeight
GPA Conversion = A(90-100)=4.0 · B(80-89)=3.0 · C(70-79)=2.0 · D(60-69)=1.0
⚖️ Weighted vs unweighted

Unweighted: simple average of all grades. Weighted: accounts for each assessment's importance. Finals typically worth 30-40%, quizzes 10-15%. Always use weighted average for accurate course grade.

🎯 Strategic planning

Use the "Final Exam Needed" mode before finals to know exactly what score you need. If you need 95%+ on the final, consider whether extra credit or improved earlier assignments are possible.

🏆 GPA scale

US 4.0 scale: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D=1.0, F=0. Most graduate schools require 3.0+ GPA for admission.

📊 Passing grades

Most institutions: D (60%) is passing. Many majors require C (70%) or better. Professional programs (medicine, law, engineering) often require 75-80% minimum to proceed.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply each grade by its weight percentage, sum those products, then divide by the total weight. Example: Assignment 85% (30 weight) + Midterm 78% (30) + Final 90% (40) = (85×30 + 78×30 + 90×40) ÷ 100 = 84.9%.
Use the "Final Exam Needed" tab. Enter your current grade, what percentage the final is worth, and your target grade. The formula is: Required = (Target − Current × (1 − FinalWeight)) ÷ FinalWeight.
GPA (Grade Point Average) converts letter grades to a 4.0 scale. A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0. Credit-weighted GPA = Σ(GPA points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). A 3.0 GPA corresponds to a B average across all courses.
It depends on the final exam weight. If the final is worth 40% and you have 55%, to reach 60% passing: Required = (60 − 55×0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (60−33) ÷ 0.4 = 67.5%. That's achievable! The calculator shows this automatically.
This calculator automatically normalises weights. If you enter weights totalling 80% (e.g. before a final is added), the calculator still gives an accurate weighted average for those assessments. The total weight displayed will show how complete the grading is.
