How does text to speech work?

This tool uses the Web Speech API's SpeechSynthesis interface, which is built into all modern browsers. It uses your device's installed text-to-speech voices — the same voices that power screen readers and accessibility tools on your computer or phone.

🌍 40+ languages

All voices installed on your device are available. Chrome on Windows typically includes 25–40 voices. Chrome on Android includes voices for 50+ languages. Install additional TTS voices in your OS settings for more options.

♿ Accessibility

TTS is invaluable for people with dyslexia, visual impairments, or reading difficulties. Use it to proofread documents by listening — errors are much easier to catch when heard rather than read.

🎧 Proofreading tip

Paste your article or essay and play it at 1.2–1.5× speed. Your ear catches awkward sentences and missing words that your eyes skip over. Used by professional writers and editors worldwide.

📚 Language learning

Paste text in the language you are learning and listen to the native pronunciation. Use slow speed (0.5–0.7×) to learn pronunciation of individual words and phrases.

Frequently asked questions

The voices depend on your browser and operating system. Chrome on Windows offers 20–40 voices. Chrome on Android has 50+ language voices. To get more voices, install TTS voices in your OS settings (Windows Settings → Time & Language → Speech, or Android Settings → Accessibility → TTS Output).
Yes, if your device has Hindi or Indian English TTS voices installed. On Chrome, "Google हिन्दी" (Hindi) is available. On Android, Hindi voices are typically pre-installed. Select them from the Voice dropdown after they load.
The Web Speech API does not provide direct audio download — it streams directly to your speakers. To save as audio, use your OS screen recording tool (Windows: Xbox Game Bar Win+G, Mac: QuickTime screen recording) to capture the audio while it plays.
The quality depends on the voice installed on your device. "Online" voices (like Google voices in Chrome) sound much more natural than "offline" system voices. Ensure you are online and select a "Google" voice from the dropdown for the best quality.
