Why count characters?

Character limits matter in many contexts — social media posts, SEO meta descriptions, SMS messages, programming variable names, and database fields all have strict limits. This tool tracks all counts live as you type so you never have to guess.

🐦 Twitter / X

Twitter allows 280 characters per post. URLs are auto-shortened to 23 characters regardless of actual length. Monitor your count live with this tool.

📸 Instagram

Captions support up to 2,200 characters but only ~125 show in feed before "more". Bio is limited to 150 characters. Hashtags count toward the limit.

🔍 SEO meta

Google shows ~160 characters for meta descriptions and ~60 for title tags. Staying within these limits prevents your search snippet from being cut off.

📱 SMS messages

Standard SMS supports 160 characters per segment (GSM-7 encoding). Unicode/emoji messages use 70 characters per segment. Longer messages split into multiple segments.

Frequently asked questions

Twitter allows 280 characters per tweet. URLs always count as 23 characters regardless of their actual length. Images, GIFs and polls do not count toward the character limit.
Google typically shows 150–160 characters for meta descriptions in search results. Keep your meta description under 160 characters to prevent it from being truncated. The most important keywords should appear in the first 120 characters.
Characters with spaces counts every character including spaces, newlines and punctuation. Characters without spaces only counts visible characters — letters, numbers and punctuation — excluding whitespace. Both counts are shown above.
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute (average adult reading speed). For example, 1,000 words = approximately 5 minutes reading time. The counter shows this estimate and updates in real time.
A standard double-spaced page (12pt, 1-inch margins) is approximately 3,000 characters or 500 words. A single-spaced page is approximately 6,000 characters or 1,000 words. These are approximations that vary by font and margin settings.
