How to convert GPA to percentage

Different universities and countries use different GPA scales and conversion formulas. Here are the most commonly used methods:

Standard (India): Percentage = GPA × 9.5
Anna University: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
VTU: Percentage = CGPA × 10
Direct: Percentage = (GPA ÷ Max Scale) × 100
🇮🇳 Indian universities

Most Indian universities on a 10-point scale use either GPA × 9.5 (standard) or the Anna University formula. Check your university handbook for the exact formula.

🇺🇸 US 4.0 scale

American universities use a 4.0 scale. A 4.0 GPA = A/A+ (93-100%), 3.5 = A- (90-92%), 3.0 = B+ (87-89%), 2.0 = C (73-76%).

🏆 Grade thresholds

First Class with Distinction: 75%+. First Class: 60-74%. Second Class: 50-59%. Pass Class: 40-49%. Below 40% is typically a fail.

📋 Why formulas differ

Each institution sets its own grading philosophy. Some weight recent performance; others use raw linear conversion. Always use the formula specified in your official transcript.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply your GPA by 9.5 for the standard Indian formula on a 10-point scale. For a 4.0 scale, divide by 4.0 and multiply by 100 for a simple conversion. Different institutions use different formulas — always verify with your university.
On a 4.0 scale, a 3.5 GPA equals approximately 87.5% using the direct formula (3.5/4.0 × 100). It falls in the A- range in most American grading systems.
On a 4.0 scale, above 3.5 is excellent (A range), 3.0-3.5 is good (B+/B range), 2.0-3.0 is average (C range), and below 2.0 may be probationary. On a 10.0 scale, above 8.0 is typically excellent.
Anna University uses: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 gives (8.5 − 0.5) × 10 = 80%. This formula is specific to Anna University and affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu.
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) uses: Percentage = CGPA × 10. So a CGPA of 8.5 gives 85%. This is a direct multiplication without any offset.
