Understanding your cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance in your blood. Your body needs it to build cells, but too much can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. There are four key markers to understand:

Frequently asked questions

A healthy total cholesterol is below 200 mg/dL (5.17 mmol/L). Borderline high is 200โ€“239 mg/dL and high risk is 240 mg/dL or above.
LDL (bad cholesterol) should ideally be below 100 mg/dL. Below 70 mg/dL is optimal for high-risk individuals. Borderline high is 130โ€“159 mg/dL and high risk is 160 mg/dL or above.
HDL (good cholesterol) should be 60 mg/dL or higher for protection. Low HDL is below 40 mg/dL for men and below 50 mg/dL for women. Higher HDL is better as it helps remove LDL from arteries.
The total cholesterol to HDL ratio is total cholesterol divided by HDL. A ratio below 4.0 is good, and below 3.5 is ideal. A high ratio signals increased cardiovascular risk.
Normal triglycerides are below 150 mg/dL. Borderline high is 150โ€“199, high is 200โ€“499, and very high is 500 mg/dL or above. High triglycerides are often linked to poor diet and metabolic syndrome.
